Deer & Lyme Disease

Deer Ticks

Deer are carriers of ticks which can transmit Lyme Disease and other viruses like Powassan Virus when an infected tick bites a human or a pet.

Contact with People & Pets

When deer regularly enter your yard or garden, the chances of coming in contact with an infected tick increase.  The best way to reduce your chances of contact are to remove the problem deer.

Lyme Disease

The Center for Disease Control has 30,000 cases of Lyme Disease reported to them annually.  The CDC estimates the actual number of cases is closer to 300,000 because Lyme Disease is very difficult to diagnose.  In Suffolk County, 1,304 cases of Lyme Disease were reported from 2010 to 2014.  Assuming the same 10x discrepancy the CDC uses in actual vs. reported cases, the actual number is closer to 13,000.  The Suffolk County health commissioner and Suffolk county legislators have called this a public health threat.
